Girl, Interrupted (Blog #7)

How does Kaysen describe McLean's "keepers"--its nurses, doctors, and therapists? How do you account for the difference between the hard-bitten full-time staff and the wide-eyed student nurses?

  1. She doesn't like the idea of needing keepers. Melvin was a therapist she actually liked. The difference between the two different types of staff is that the full time are so intense and strict while the wide eyed student nurses are nicer and more chill in a sense. They make it more fun but they could also be taken advantage of.

  2. Valerie is a good "keeper". She is more of a motherly figure to the girls at the hospital. She is warm and there for the girls. She is who they can talk to or look up to in the ward. An example of her kindness is when she takes Susanna to the dentist and Susanna says something and Valerie says " That was sensible of you."(Kaysen 107). This was a great feeling to Susanna because it has been a long time since someone said that to her she states on page 108.
Overall the keepers are nice and helpful to have around.
