Girl, Interrupted (Blog #4)

Girl, Interrupted
Susanna Kaysen

1. Define the word "Juxtaposition".

2. What does the author accomplish by juxtaposing her actual medical records and case notes with the narrative? How do these documents contribute to your impression of Susanna's psychic state? How would this book be different without them?

  1. Juxtaposition: noun- the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect.
I think the author gives us a different view on what it was like to be her in the mental asylum when she juxtaposed the medical records and case notes. It helped show was she felt and what the doctors thought. They make me worried because she is in a hospital and did have depression and such but she is a sane person in the shoes of someone insane so I get confused. The book would be very different without them because the reader would not have the raw facts which make the book feel more real and pull the reader in more.
